My family enjoys summer gatherings that involve loads of side dishes and desserts. This Easy as Pie Fruit Salad could be considered either.
My granny has had this recipe for decades and we are all big fans of the assorted fruit that she includes in it, but the secret ingredient that takes it over the top is Cherry Pie Filling. If you’re not a Cherry Pie Filling fan, it’s not distinct, but you can swap it out for Strawberry or Peach Pie Filling.
This Easy as Pie Fruit Salad is a great make ahead dish. If you are planning to make it the night before your event, wait to add the bananas to it before serving. The freshly sliced bananas will not brown as easily, and the texture will be more appealing in the final product.
I serve this Easy as Pie Fruit Salad as a topping for Southern Living’s Cream Cheese Pound Cake, as you can see in the photo, but it’s delicious on its own.

Use a large bowl since this makes a large fruit salad. This recipe is best chilled so I make it the night before a gathering and slice and stir the bananas into it before serving.
Thaw the frozen strawberries. Drain all of the fruit. Place the strawberries and drained canned fruit into the bowl. If using, add the grapes. Stir in the cherry pie filling gently so that you don’t break up the fruit too much.
Chill the fruit salad until ready to serve. Before serving, fold in the sliced bananas. I slice my bananas into 1/4 – 1/2 inch round pieces.
Note – if you can’t find canned fruit that’s diced, dice the fruit into bite sized pieces. If you are unable to purchase the large cans of fruit, buy two 15 ounce cans instead.
Substitute any flavor of pie filling and add different types of canned fruit if desired. Fruit cocktail is a great substitute.
